How Steel Pans are made

PAN MAKING PROCESS
Making a pan is an intricate and complex process. The drum's face is sunken so as to make a concave surface. The depth depends on the pitch range of the pan. The notes are then marked off with boundaries into varying sizes. Pans are then grooved with a punch and hammer. Each indentation must physically connect with the other. This is to ensure that each note is insulated from others. "Burning" of the drum over an open fire follows before the final stage- Tuning. The tuner uses a hammer to tap the notes in various directions.
